Mr Steve Brine MP
Public Health Ministe
Department of Health

Richmond House
79 Whitehall
London, SW1A 2NS

Dear Mr Brine,

I wrote to you on 15th November regarding the discovery of the first counterfeit plain tobacco packs as the Government Department that introduced the measure. I have received no response or acknowledgement to date.

I asked specifically what action your Department intended to take including what assurances you are able to give to local retailers in terms of clear messages and education and what this looked like in terms of activities and measures.

I am also aware that your Department directly funds a programme of work at the local level around tobacco control via the Chartered Institute of Trading Standards. It would therefore seem appropriate that some of this resource and capacity is directed towards tackling this new threat.

This is matter of grave worry to many small, independent retailers particularly as there have been further discoveries of counterfeit plain packs. I find it therefore disappointing that after nearly two months I have yet to receive a response or even an acknowledgment.

I look forward to hearing from you as a matter of urgency.

Yours sincerely,

Suleman Khonat,

National Spokesperson,
Tobacco Retailers’ Alliance
